Traditional Caribbean Sorrel Recipe
Sorrel is a Caribbean drink that is a very popular around the Christmas holiday season. This drink is actually made from the flower Hibiscus. The dried flower that is used to make this drink can be found in any West Indian market. Try it if you want to spice up your holiday Caribbean style!
Ingredients:
2 quarts water
1 lb dried sorrel
2 cinnamon sticks
1/2 cup grated ginger
8-10 pimento grains (if available)
1/2 cup sugar
(Ice and rum if desired)
Wash sorrel and put it in a deep stainless steel container. Add chopped ginger, cinnamon sticks, and crushed pimento grains. Bring water to a boil in a separate pot. Pour boiled water over ingredients. Let it sit overnight or for several hours. Next strain and pour liquid into a pitcher. Sweeten with sugar. Chill until ready to serve.
Optional:
Add rum or Brandy to kick it up a notch. Serve on ice and garnish with a lemon slice.
